ABOUT US
In 2016, two San Francisco moms decided it was time for their young children to begin their formal Jewish education. But where? The local synagogues that gave us the homey feel we remembered from growing up didn't reflect our progressive ideas about what a Jewish family can be. The synagogues that spoke to our Jewish worldview just didn't "do" Jewish the way we wanted. So we took matters into our own hands and created Shabbat Club. We wanted our kids and others like them in the community to have a warm, safe, and delicious space to come together as Jews and begin to question what that means to them.
Led by Shaina Hammerman--a Jewish educator for two decades who holds an MA in Jewish Studies and a PhD in Jewish cultural history--Shabbat Club came to life. Families who might otherwise not practice any Jewish rituals enthusiastically sent their kids for a cozy Shabbat meal and an opportunity to learn with other Jewish children.

With kids ages 3-9, Shabbat Club offers children the opportunity to learn from each other with the help of developmentally appropriate crafts, stories, games, and plenty of delicious food! When children return home, they often teach their parents about Jewish practices and rituals. Through Shabbat Club, a generation of engaged, curious, and open Jews flourishes in our city.
